Where is Ely, Minnesota? Situated in Northeastern Minnesota, Ely is the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and the hundreds of lakes and rivers within its one million acres. The Superior National Forest is a 3 million acre forest with more than 445,000 acres of lakes and rivers with opportunities for camping, boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, backpacking, and biking in summer, and Nordic and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, skating, and dog sledding during winter.
Are there hiking trails near Ely? There are many hiking trails for short hikes, or full day trips, including Bass Lake and Angleworm Trails up the Echo Trail, the Trezona, Hidden Valley, or Snowbank Trails. All trails vary in scenery with lakes, rivers and large rocky bluffs.
What about fishing? The 5,000+ lakes in our area provide excellent fishing opportunities for Walleye, Bass, Northern Pike, and Rainbow or Lake Trout. Of course pan fish abound as well.
What are some other items of interest in this area? The International Wolf Center houses a resident wolf pack for visitors to observe with exhibits, videos, and lectures. The Dorothy Molter Museum pays tribute to the "root beer" lady who lived on Knife Lake in the BWCAW until her death. The Ely-Winton Historical Museum traces the history of logging and mining in this area. The Soudan Underground Mine is provides tours of Minnesota's deepest iron ore mine.
